Change Six – Get Better At the Dishes

Despite what you might expect, this isn’t simply about doing the dishes. I actually do wash the dishes, after each meal, even. (And Sarah does the cooking. It’s part of this whole division of labour thing I got roped into.) The problem is that I’m not a real attention-to-details kind of guy. I don’t half-ass it, but I’ve been known to three-quarter-ass it on occasion. Which means I’m not also so good at getting all the crud off the dishes. I swear that I don’t know that I’m doing it when I’m doing it. I don’t see that half brick of cheese caked on to the plate. I overlook that chunky bit of whatever that gets trapped in the bottom of the glass. I’ll let Sarah correct my if I’m overstating these stats here, but I think that five dishes out of six come out okay, but that sixth dish always seems to end up with shmeng on it--which I don’t see until it’s been on the drying rack for half a day.

And this isn’t a new phenomenon. I remember Brady pointing this out to me a couple dozen times. “Dude, when you wash the dishes they’re actually supposed to be clean when you’re done.” After bugging me about it about it for about a year, he just sort of resigned himself to the fact that nothing would change. We’d be in the kitchen, he’d pick up a plate and say “that’s a Dave dish right there” as he flaked off some crust with his fingernail. Then we’d just keep doing what we where doing.

So here, officially, I pledge to do a better job.

You have me beat at "I actually do wash the dishes."

Also, you could buy a dishwasher and then be done without.

This reminds of the joke: "What does Sarah do when the dishwasher stops working?" ... "Slap him."

I'm here all week folks, enjoy the soy protein veal substitute.

Beth - I now have tea on my keyboard because of that joke. Thanks!

Dave - no doubt Sarah will be holding you to this change.

Beth - we do have a diswasher. It is an old school water-waster that came with the house. It just doesn't get used much with two people. And it isn't great for pots and pans.

Dave - you have NEVER mentioned that Brady story before. I am at the same point as Brady, though...flaking the crap off the dishes.

Also - for that sake of accuracy: it is probably at the point where 2/3 of the dishes are ok.

I love you too, baby.

NASTY. I will pre wash when I come visit. Or bring my own. Oh wait. My dish washing skills are below par aswell. Derek is the king washer. However, it only happens once every full moon.

Discuss Amongst Yourselves - January 30th, 2006

In case you don’t read my comments (and if not, you’re nuts cause that’s where all the good stuff is), Courtney has just declared herself movie illiterate. So, if you had to recommend five essential movies that everyone should see, what would they be? Let me stress: only five. For those of you with break-the-rules tendencies (like--I dunno--just picking a name out of the air... Jorge ?), your comment gets chucked out. Give’r.

A complex phrase, in which the various parts are enchained

“Barry,” my cousin Mike said, “I think it’s time.” It was clear that my brother didn’t feel the same way, but he only shrugged, which Mike took as agreement. “Dave,” he said, giving the words as much gravity as he could muster, “Go get the dictionary.” I was nine years old, and a tag-along. I’d walked in on my brother telling a story about how—during school that morning—a girl he knew got her period in the middle of French class. And I laughed like the dickens. And then they called me on it. After I’d lugged the dictionary down from the spare room, Mike told me to look up the word period and read out the definition. “The end of a cycle, a series of events, or a single action?” “Keep going,” he said. “The full pause with which a sentence closes?” “Not that.” “An interval of geologic—“ “Gimme that!” He yanked the book towards him, read down the page, and pointed me towards the definition he’d found.
