7:00

I’ve been trying this thing where I get up an hour earlier each morning. Typically, I start work at nine and, as it’s only a fifteen minute walk, I can roll out of bed at eight and still make it to work on time. (Some of you hate me for this—and you’re right to.) Well one morning last week, Gunther got me up early. He typically goes batshit at about four in the morning, and then I get up, chase him into the spare room, lock him up, and go back to sleep. But this one day, he was gracious enough not to perform his pay-attention to me freak-out until around seven. I though well shit, no point in going back to bed, so I sat down in front of the computer and worked for an hour. And it was great! I’m not especially sociable first thing in the morning, but my productivity is phenomenal. So I thought I'd try to make a habit of it.

I’ve failed a few times, on the grey days, or the days I’m up late frigging around on the computer, but by and large it’s been a pretty big success. My main roadblock is that I don’t want to surrender that hour at night. Hence the many failures. From time to time I convince myself that I could probably start sleeping less to no ill effect. “You know, I’m losing all this time to sleep. I’m just gonna cut that short by about three hours or so…” which usually lasts about four days before I start getting the DTs. I would love to get up at six o'clock each morning and just have two hours to pour into… whatever—going for a run, writing, reading. But frankly, I just don’t want to be one of those people that goes to bed at nine-thirty. I don’t want to surrender my rock and roll lifestyle.

Meh. I have a 20 minute walk to work, but I'm pokey in the morning. I'm usually up at 6:30, shower, putter, have breakfast, putter, go online, putter, make my lunch and leave. However, I'm a morning person - I'm usually no good after 9:30, so I might as well be going to bed then.

Now, where the hell did I put my dentures and cold cream?

I need to start getting up early.

I tend to keep staying in bed, and really, it's that extra 30 minutes of sleep that kicks my ass.

That bit about "not wanting to be one of those people who goes to bed at nine-thirty" came off a bit smug. Honestly, it's not like I do anything really important late in the night. Apologies to the four people I know who read this that fall into the early-to-bed category.

Jorge, you need to enjoy your sleep while you can. It won't be long before you won't be worried about getting up early because you won't be getting any sleep at all!

This may amaze all of you, but I get up every morning at seven, take a shower, do my hair and make-up, get dressed, wake up Braeden and get him ready for school, and still manage to leave the house by 7:30 to be at work by 8.

In the mornings, I am like the Tasmanian Devil!!!

(I, too, have tried to get up early in the morning to do things (i.e., work out, write, eat breakfast, etc.) but I can never make myself surrender that extra hour of sleep. I love sleep.)

I have to get up an hour before Jason in order to be ready to leave at the same time. Obviously, if the appointment is for before noon, he goes alone.

I should add...

... that two people were instrumental in my joining Twitter. First, Isha . She sent out an article on it when the application was still brand new. (And I remember thinking, "Screw that noise. Like I need more online commitments.) Second was Rebecca . She joined up just a short while ago, claiming she hadn't met a bandwidth she didn't like . (And then she disappeared entirely from the internets .) It looked nice and pretty over there on her sidebar, and then I got a little jealous. The rest: history. And for those unobservant among you ( Jorge ), the Twitter feed is right there on my sidebar, replacing the old Radio 3 player that I loved, but that I think scared the bejezus out of a lot of people. Also, everyone should join Twitter. I'm needing some diversions , people.
Change Two: Drink More Water Such a simple thing, yet something I just can't seem to find the time to do. About the only water I drink in your average day is whatever sweat happens to trickle off my mustache. Hydration (so the smart people tell me) is a good thing. I'm less fatigued when I drink water. I'm less hungry when I drink water. I'm even less grumpy when I drink water. I promise you nothing especially impressive. Eight glass a day ain't gonna happen. I'm shooting for two on average; two trendy, metallic, not gonna bleed Bisphenol A into my system bottles of water. I know were off to a rip-roaring start, what with the list-making and the hydration, but I'll try to get crazier with future changes. Stuff like: go to work drunk more, and buy a pair of leather pants. For now, let me ease into it.
