Not how we imagined the rest of the day would go...

It's Sarah here...

We didn't imagine a call from Sally (who just had a baby and whose birthday is today), telling us that something was really wrong with my Aunt Flo. And that the hospital said that family should get to Kingston ASAP.

We hadn't foreseen a panicked drive through pea soup fog to KGH, meeting my parents at Emergency.

We didn't predict sitting in the OR waiting room while she underwent emergency neurosurgery for over 4 hours.

We couldn't have predicted waiting outside the ICU until 3:30 a.m. to catch a glimpse of my 47-year old aunt hooked up to a ventilator while in a drug-induced coma.

We never imagined asking Uncle Serge to call Aunt Pat while on March Break with the family, having to tell her that they'd have to come back first thing in the morning.

We never wanted to entertain thoughts about 'making the call' about the life of someone we love.

The neurosurgeon (one of the top in Eastern Ontario) couldn't identify what was wrong; we suspect hemorrhagic stroke. She is stable right now. The next day or so will be really telling. It came as a complete shock, as she was in excellent health.

She is the kindest woman you could ever hope to meet. She is the woman who read to me until she went hoarse, who never missed a birthday or special occasion, who visited more sickbeds than I can count, who played tirelessly with small children, who adopted abandoned kittens. I have often wished that I were as patient and kind as she; there is no one that she wouldn’t have helped. And we can do nothing for her right now, nothing but wait and hope.

We here at touchyoulast might be pretty quiet for a while. If you can spare any good thoughts or prayers, we'd really appreciate them.

Hey guys.

Jorge and Mrs. Jorge here with positive thoughts for all of you going through this crisis.

Lots of crap going on all over the place, but at least we're all in it together, right?

Hugs and best wishes possible in a time like this,

J

Sarah, I haven't been able to stop thinking about you since we got off the phone. For those who have never meet her, it is no exaggeration to say that Aunt Flo is the kindest woman you could ever hope to meet. Please know that our thoughts are with you and your family and that we are here for you.

I've never met Aunt Flo, but she sounds like an incredible lady. All of you will be in my thoughts today, and until she gets better.

Stay strong.

I should add...

... that two people were instrumental in my joining Twitter. First, Isha . She sent out an article on it when the application was still brand new. (And I remember thinking, "Screw that noise. Like I need more online commitments.) Second was Rebecca . She joined up just a short while ago, claiming she hadn't met a bandwidth she didn't like . (And then she disappeared entirely from the internets .) It looked nice and pretty over there on her sidebar, and then I got a little jealous. The rest: history. And for those unobservant among you ( Jorge ), the Twitter feed is right there on my sidebar, replacing the old Radio 3 player that I loved, but that I think scared the bejezus out of a lot of people. Also, everyone should join Twitter. I'm needing some diversions , people.
Change Two: Drink More Water Such a simple thing, yet something I just can't seem to find the time to do. About the only water I drink in your average day is whatever sweat happens to trickle off my mustache. Hydration (so the smart people tell me) is a good thing. I'm less fatigued when I drink water. I'm less hungry when I drink water. I'm even less grumpy when I drink water. I promise you nothing especially impressive. Eight glass a day ain't gonna happen. I'm shooting for two on average; two trendy, metallic, not gonna bleed Bisphenol A into my system bottles of water. I know were off to a rip-roaring start, what with the list-making and the hydration, but I'll try to get crazier with future changes. Stuff like: go to work drunk more, and buy a pair of leather pants. For now, let me ease into it.
