So, is work sucking for everyone right now?

Say yes.

Dave, I'm pretty sure that nothing can feel good on a Monday morning in February, in Ottawa, when you're coming down off a sunny holiday.

Time to break out the uncle Karl - he could be talking about you!

[Dave] does not affirm himself in his labor, but rather denies himself; he does not feel happy, but rather unhappy; he does not grow physically or mentally, but rather tortures his body and ruins his mind. The laborer feels himself first to be other than his labor and his labor to be other than himself. ... [Alienated labour's] estranged character becomes obvious when one sees that as soon as there is no physical or other coercion, labor is avoided like the plague. . . . the activity of the laborer is not his own activity. It belongs to someone else, it is the loss of his self.

Jorge, fyi this bit of the economic and philosophic manuscripts of 1844 was translated by Richard Hooker.

Bonus points to Jody for bringing it full circle.

This is what we like to see.

Now all you have to do is comment on my blog, and you'll get a free pie!

Jody, part of me suspects that you didn't even have to look up that Marx quote. It was just there in ready knowledge for you.

"Say yes."

Mm. Like you have to encourage me.

I am in Edmonton visiting my friend who is a happy, married, pregnant lawyer.

You just got back from a cruise, with your wife and are back at your well-paid job in your field.

I am single, barren and way unemployed. Yesterday I got three rejections from jobs I thought I was overqualified for -- didn't even make it to the short list.

And you want sympathy?

On another, less antagonistic, note: Dave, please read "Graceland" by Chris Abani immediately. Something tells me you'll really like it.

P.S. Jody you are astounding. And Beth, getting a fellowship to Stanford is just a fancy and fulfilling kind of work...

Shel, you are far from barren.

And thanks for mentioning me in your shoutouts, you bastard.
Anonymous said…
Jorge,

I'm not barren but I'm a bastard?

And you wonder why you get no shoutouts...
Anonymous said…
Hey, bastard is a term of endearment. Why, Dave's family all call him that.

My best friend used to call me a bastard all the time, and I would get so mad at him, but then he said 'Wait, you really ARE a bastard.' And, I actually am, since my parents were never married.

So it doesn't bother me anymore. After all, I come by it honestly.

I should add...

... that two people were instrumental in my joining Twitter. First, Isha . She sent out an article on it when the application was still brand new. (And I remember thinking, "Screw that noise. Like I need more online commitments.) Second was Rebecca . She joined up just a short while ago, claiming she hadn't met a bandwidth she didn't like . (And then she disappeared entirely from the internets .) It looked nice and pretty over there on her sidebar, and then I got a little jealous. The rest: history. And for those unobservant among you ( Jorge ), the Twitter feed is right there on my sidebar, replacing the old Radio 3 player that I loved, but that I think scared the bejezus out of a lot of people. Also, everyone should join Twitter. I'm needing some diversions , people.
Change Two: Drink More Water Such a simple thing, yet something I just can't seem to find the time to do. About the only water I drink in your average day is whatever sweat happens to trickle off my mustache. Hydration (so the smart people tell me) is a good thing. I'm less fatigued when I drink water. I'm less hungry when I drink water. I'm even less grumpy when I drink water. I promise you nothing especially impressive. Eight glass a day ain't gonna happen. I'm shooting for two on average; two trendy, metallic, not gonna bleed Bisphenol A into my system bottles of water. I know were off to a rip-roaring start, what with the list-making and the hydration, but I'll try to get crazier with future changes. Stuff like: go to work drunk more, and buy a pair of leather pants. For now, let me ease into it.
