Discuss amongst yourselves - August 1st

I've just come back from a weekend in the woods (more on that later), so today's question is: which celebrity died while I was gone? It's just one of those things that always seems to happen. Failing that, which celebrity death were you most out of the loop for because you were on vacation or cloistered away somewhere?

Long John Baldry. I think he died around the same time as James Doohan, but I just found out about it on the weekend.

I think Dave is paranoid because we were making fun of a bunch of celebrities on our trip.

He would feel bad if one of them died.

King Fahed of Saudi Arabia. Apparently the name means "son of the lion".

I tend not to overly care when celebrities pass away; can't say I notice them even when I'm home with CNN in full reach. However, last week Jason came home from work and said to me "Did you hear that Hunter S. Thompson died?" and I was like "Yeah...like, months ago."
He died in February. It's news to Jason. Where did he even get this news?

There's a show on a local radio station in Detroit (well, at least there used to be) called "Dead or Canadian". We down here in the South never know what celebrities you guys have sent us, so the show is usually full of comments from the callers like, "Kiefer Sutherland is dead?", or "Someone killed off ALL of the Barenaked Ladies?".

Dear Jorge,

Oh. Sorry!

But no one important died (except King Faud, apparently - I missed that one too)!

Dear Katie,

That is frickin' hilarious!

r. :)

Katie -- John Candy, dead or Canadian?? :)

Generally, the celeb deaths where I'm the MOST out of the loop are the ones that take place when I'm out of the country. When I was in Europe (with Katie) for a month in '99, Dano Plato bit it. (Who? Kimberley from Diff'rent Strokes). Asia '00 was Rocket Richard.

But the worst - this past October, on our honeymoon (on the cruise ship) we found out about Christopher Reeve about 1.5 weeks after the rest of the world; we caught a repeat of Leno where Robin Williams was talking about CR in the past tense. We looked at each other and asked "Umm...did CR die?"

A complex phrase, in which the various parts are enchained

“Barry,” my cousin Mike said, “I think it’s time.” It was clear that my brother didn’t feel the same way, but he only shrugged, which Mike took as agreement. “Dave,” he said, giving the words as much gravity as he could muster, “Go get the dictionary.” I was nine years old, and a tag-along. I’d walked in on my brother telling a story about how—during school that morning—a girl he knew got her period in the middle of French class. And I laughed like the dickens. And then they called me on it. After I’d lugged the dictionary down from the spare room, Mike told me to look up the word period and read out the definition. “The end of a cycle, a series of events, or a single action?” “Keep going,” he said. “The full pause with which a sentence closes?” “Not that.” “An interval of geologic—“ “Gimme that!” He yanked the book towards him, read down the page, and pointed me towards the definition he’d found. In case you don’t read my comments (and if not, you’re nuts cause that’s where all the good stuff is), Courtney has just declared herself movie illiterate. So, if you had to recommend five essential movies that everyone should see, what would they be? Let me stress: only five. For those of you with break-the-rules tendencies (like--I dunno--just picking a name out of the air... Jorge ?), your comment gets chucked out. Give’r.
