March 21st - discuss amongst yourselves

Having just watched almost the entire Greatest Canadian series, today’s question became this: who would you nominate for the greatest person from where you live? If you live in Toronto, we’re talking about the Greatest Torontonian; in Cornwall, the Greatest Cornwallian; it could be the Greatest Vancouverite, the Greatest Thai, or the Greatest Afghani. Let me know.

The greatest Afghan? I could not hope to guess but Massoud, the assassinated Northern Alliance leader, has his image everywhere: overlooking the stadium in Kabul where the Taliban used to have public stonings, on all major traffic thoroughfares, and on blankets and clocks for sale in the bazaar. For today's New Year celebrations they had someone washing the two-storey version of him overlooking the shrine.

The greatest Haligonian? Probably the Dawgfather (a former boxer who converted to Islam and sells beef, veggie, halal and kosher dogs from a cart.)

The greatest Miltonian? Well, what's great about Milton is it's sad anonymity...if pressed I'd say whoever thought of the making the movie theatre a testament to the zebra.

The ironic thing about this whole line of discussion is that the greatest [insert city/country here] person is probably toiling in obscurity.

However, the greatest Ottawan is none other than Dave McLean, 79-year-old escort/researcher/CEO from Ottawa, Ontario. Originally hailing from Georgetown.

His tireless work to become the first transexual nazi eskimo to cross the Ottawa River on a pogo stick will not be forgotten.

Hurmmmmm

Well popular responses to greatest Cornwallian would have to be either be Lori Dupuis the hockey player (big deal) or that young guy from The Notebook (puke), but I think that time will tell that it's actually me. You'll be glad you got in on the ground floor.

Dave, it's funny how many of the greatest people from various cities read your blog. As it so happens, *I* am the greatest Vancouverite. Runners up include David Suzuki, William Gibson (visionary sci-fi writer), Michael Smith (Nobel prize winner for his work in genetics), Bill Reid (artist) and Trevor Linden (and not just 'cuz he's an AWESOME hockey player... his chartiable work is amazing too).

And I agree with BRNQ that whoever thought to put the zebra in the movie theatre is the greatest Miltonian...

I wouldn't be so sure about that. I've heard that it is a trojan Zebra, filled with armed hobbits awating the word to attack people with their slingshots and empty pint glasses.

I should add...

... that two people were instrumental in my joining Twitter. First, Isha . She sent out an article on it when the application was still brand new. (And I remember thinking, "Screw that noise. Like I need more online commitments.) Second was Rebecca . She joined up just a short while ago, claiming she hadn't met a bandwidth she didn't like . (And then she disappeared entirely from the internets .) It looked nice and pretty over there on her sidebar, and then I got a little jealous. The rest: history. And for those unobservant among you ( Jorge ), the Twitter feed is right there on my sidebar, replacing the old Radio 3 player that I loved, but that I think scared the bejezus out of a lot of people. Also, everyone should join Twitter. I'm needing some diversions , people.
Change Two: Drink More Water Such a simple thing, yet something I just can't seem to find the time to do. About the only water I drink in your average day is whatever sweat happens to trickle off my mustache. Hydration (so the smart people tell me) is a good thing. I'm less fatigued when I drink water. I'm less hungry when I drink water. I'm even less grumpy when I drink water. I promise you nothing especially impressive. Eight glass a day ain't gonna happen. I'm shooting for two on average; two trendy, metallic, not gonna bleed Bisphenol A into my system bottles of water. I know were off to a rip-roaring start, what with the list-making and the hydration, but I'll try to get crazier with future changes. Stuff like: go to work drunk more, and buy a pair of leather pants. For now, let me ease into it.
